What is feminine? How does color relate to gender? Clothing and ornamentation are
forms of expression that help to define the women I paint as individuals. I paint women in
contemplative moods. I also try to incorporate the light and color of California's natural
beauty into my paintings.
I enjoy mixing realistic figures and images from nature in a sometimes unnatural manner.
The figure gives the viewer an anchor in reality that allows them to enter the more
abstracted areas of the painting. The paintings can often have a flat appearance almost
like that of a collage or a Japanese woodcut.
The use of metallic highlights was inspired by Byzantine icons and the paintings of Gustav
Klimt. The work of the Tonalists, especially Arthur and Lucia Mathews’ paintings, frames
and furniture, has also been an influence.
